7 Recently Changed Logos And The Reason Behind The Change

Tastes change with time. What was fashionable decades ago, may not be now. Companies, whose logos were designed many moons ago, are going for sleeker; shinier and simpler designs to match with the recent trend. There are several other reasons behind why a company changes its logo. If a company is taken over by a powerful brand, its logo is redesigned to add the features of the company which took over it. Logos are also revamped to remove potential hindrances. It can be better described by an example. Starbucks removed ‘coffee’ from its logo when they planned to expand their product line. This blog presents 7 such recently changed logos and also describes the reason for the same.

1.    IHOP

Let’s begin with the most recent one. IHOP, a United States-based restaurant chain, changed its logo on 2nd June,2015, after almost 20 years, since its inception. According to the company, their logo looked somewhat like a person’s frown. Therefore, IHOP designed a new one that look like a smile, instead.

2.    Aam Admi Party

Time for some sneak-peek political news! Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has changed its logo in May, 2015, after one of its volunteers disapproved the usage of the old one. The party’s Facebook page and Twitter account now showcase the new logo in blue color and has replaced the one in saffron-green. However, the official AAP website still has the old, disputed logo.

3.    Airbnb

Airbnb changed its logo in July, 2014, and replaced it with a symbol “Belo”, with the aim to convey that Airbnb is more of a community for people who get a feeling of belongingness when they stay together. Unfortunately, the idea of the logo maker couldn’t click the audience and the company’s branding strategy was ignored. It has even been pointed out that the logo resembles both female and male reproductive organs.

4.    Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI)

Copyright violation issue as per the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA)! OCA APPROVED Indonesia to host the 2018 Asian Games, after Vietnam decided to step back due to lack of financial support. But, one warning letter has been sent to KONI (Indonesian National Sports Committee) by the International Olympic Committee. The letter states that KONI may lose the hosting privilege because it has used the five interlocking rings of the Olympic in its symbol.

5.    Bacardi

You might think why the largest rum company on this planet would think about changing! When everything is going so well, why taking risks, right?

But that’s what Bacardi has done since 1862. It has changed its logo for 8 times till date. The iconic bat reflects their heritage. This time, the new design was inspired by the bat, which was hand-drawn, somewhere around early 1900s. It used big hand-cut fonts enthused by those beautifying the Art Deco El Edificio Bacardi, iconic bar and former sales office in Havana, Cuba. The Bacardi bat symbolizes sound health, good fortune and family unity.

6.    PayPal

PayPal’s logo will no longer be confused with the parking sign. The logo designer has added a second P to PayPal’s new design. It is expected that the new logo, designed by Fuseproject, will be more readable and identifiable than the previous logo. Beside, this new identity also hints at its booming mobile future. It is the 1st complete redesign in 7 years and only the 2nd in its history.

7.    Reebok

Let’s see what this big daddy is up to! Reebok came up with a new ‘Delta’ symbol in March, 2014, as it moves from relating itself with professional athletes to fitness buffs. This is the 2nd full redesign in the history of 121 years. This ‘Delta’ logo will be used on the Crossfit gear of the company.

Revamping helps companies to come under the limelight and become noticeable to its customers. It stirs the minds of customers in some way, which make them think “ Hey, something looks new about the brand! What is it?” Logo change indeed is a powerful tool, generating curiosity on the subconscious level.
